Abstract:
We present results on soft X-ray resonant inelastic scattering from elemental cobalt with excitation in the region of the L-3 threshold (incoming photon energies at selected values between 776 eV and 787 eV). Spectra measured vs the outgoing photon energy are interpreted in terms of two inelastic processes: the valence scattering producing a final valence state hole and the inner shell scattering producing a final 3s hole. In both cases the resonant behavior is clear and the results support a bandlike picture of the process. This is confirmed by the comparison at selected energies with NiO in the case of 3s inner shell resonant scattering. In fact NiO being strongly correlated shows a clear departure from a bandlike behavior. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.
