Abstract:
We present experimental results on M, X-ray resonant Raman scattering with a final 4p(-1) core hole from Gd in the metal and in Gadolinium Gallium Garnet, Gd3Ga5O12. The data show a strong asymmetrical lineshape with a tail extending over an energy range of nearly 50 eV. This is attributed to the final state interaction between the 4p(-1)4f(8) configuration and the configurations with two 4d core holes (4d(-2)4f(9)). Moreover, we show that within the experimental accuracy, the effect is identical in the metal and in the 5 eV gap insulator. This shows that the Doniach-Sunjic effect does not need to be considered in the discussion of the data from the metal. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
